David Malcolm and his wife Annie believe in supporting community-based organizations engaged with important issues such as homelessness and higher education. He served on the board of directors of St. Vincent de Paul Management (a subsidiary of Father Joe’s Villages, a homeless services provider) for 31 years, four of which were as chair.

Other board service has included Board 1 of the San Diego County Assessment Appeals Board, which he chaired, University of California San Diego Board of Overseers, American Cancer Society San Diego, Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate at San Diego State University, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, First International Bank of San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and South Bay Family YMCA, among others.

In 2013, he and Annie established the David Malcolm Family Trust at the San Diego Foundation, from which they have provided grants to a wide range of community organizations. In 2021, they directed $100,000 to the Foundation’s Community Scholars Initiative.

Also, in 2021, they created the David Malcolm Scholarship for high school and college students who have overcome adversity in their quest for higher education and who can inspire others.

David Malcolm freely admits that his wealth will ultimately be limited because of his and Annie’s willingness to give money to make a positive difference in the community that has provided so much for them and their two grown sons.
